German building permits surge as housing demand rebounds

Germany recorded a significant rise in building permits in June 2025, signalling renewed momentum in the construction sector, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

A total of 19,000 residential units were approved during the month, up 7.9% – or 1,400 units – compared with June 2024. Across the first half of 2025, approvals increased by 3,100 apartments compared with the same period in 2024, when figures had dropped to their lowest level since 2010.

Single-family homes saw the strongest growth, with permits rising 14.1% to 21,300 units. However, approvals for two-family homes fell by 8.3%. Multi-family homes, the largest segment of the market, remained steady, with 57,300 units approved – virtually unchanged from the previous year.

The uptick in permits is seen as a positive indicator for the furniture and home industries, which often track construction activity as a measure of future demand. Industry analysts suggest the figures may signal a gradual recovery in housing development following years of sluggish growth.
