Eames classic returns:

Herman Miller reimagines the Molded Plastic Dining Chair for a sustainable future

Herman Miller, in partnership with the Eames Office, has reintroduced the iconic Eames Molded Plastic Dining Chair, originally launched as the EC-127 in 1970, now redesigned with sustainable materials and expanded options.

The chair, crafted from 99 percent post-industrial recycled plastic, is offered in a spectrum of contemporary colours and upholstery choices. For the first time, a non-upholstered version is available, making it suitable for high-use environments such as offices, libraries, dining rooms, and restaurants.

Charles and Ray Eames were renowned for their iterative design process, revisiting and improving their creations over time. The EC-127 evolved from the 1946 DCM (Dining Chair-Metal) and DCM-L (for libraries), featuring longer back legs to support upright posture. 'Instead of plywood, the Eames Office used reinforced plastic, which allowed them to add a new shock-absorbing rubber and metal mount that was stronger, easier to manufacture, and didn't alter the chair's form,' notes Herman Miller. The updated chair now combines a durable plastic frame with a curved seat and back, providing ergonomic support for a range of activities.

The playful colour palette and fabric options are inspired by the Eames prototype "The Toy", reflecting their signature aesthetic. Legs can be finished in classic chrome, black, white, or powder-coated primary colours such as blaze, marigold, and berry blue. Upholstery selections, including Alexander Girard's Hopsak fabric, echo those originally offered when the chair was first introduced.

Eames Demetrios, Director of the Eames Office and grandson of Charles and Ray Eames, states: 'In addition to being comfortable and elegant, the EC-127 is a perfect exemplar of the Eameses belief in constant improvement of their own designs. As pioneers of the use of plastic for affordable and durable furniture, they applied that knowledge to eliminate the need for separate shock mounts. Their understanding of the qualities of plastic allowed the Eameses to merge those shock mounts with the seat and back while making the chair itself more lightweight, it also made possible greater colour variety. Unsurprisingly, since the Eames Office of today is the very firm that Charles and Ray started, we've continued that process by working with Herman Miller to use the most environmentally friendly recycled plastics available to reintroduce this beautiful chair.'

The chair is available from Herman Miller stores, online, and through MillerKnoll dealers for contract customers, with availability varying by region.

Herman Miller continues to champion innovative, sustainable, and timeless design, while the Eames Office maintains the legacy of one of the world's most influential design practices.
