Germany's DIY industry showed signs of stabilisation in 2024, recording a modest 0.8% sales decline compared to a sharper 2.9% drop in 2023, according to the latest "DIY Store + Garden Statistics DACH 2025" report. Despite the slowdown, overall sales reached €24.84 billion, around €80 million below the sector's long-term growth trend from 1999 to 2019.

The "Big Three" (Bauhaus, Obi and Hornbach) managed to weather the challenging market, posting nominal growth rates between 0.0% and 0.5%. Sonderpreis Baumarkt outperformed peers with a 2.3% rise, making it the only operator to surpass inflation. Bauhaus also solidified its position as Germany's largest DIY retailer, overtaking Obi in total sales following sustained expansion and Obi's strategic exit from Russia in 2022.
Internationally, German operators achieved a 2.9% sales increase in Europe, though much of this was driven by a statistical adjustment at Hagebau. Without this, 2024 would have marked the lowest growth year since 1999. Hornbach recorded the strongest foreign growth at 2.4%, followed by Bauhaus at 1.0% and Obi at 0.4%.
The number of stores in Germany remained stable, while international operations saw slight growth, with six additional locations and a 1.1% increase in sales area.
