Villeroy & Boch Group is considering closing a tunnel kiln at its Armitage Shanks site in Staffordshire, in what it called "an incredibly difficult announcement". The proposal could affect up to 100 employees as part of efforts to "optimise operations, streamline capacity, and enhance long-term business competitiveness".

The company confirmed that commercial roles and its central distribution centre will remain unaffected, and customers should not experience any disruption. It stressed its commitment to maintaining a strong manufacturing and commercial presence in the UK, which it describes as one of its largest markets.
Lisa Whitfield, UK managing director, acknowledged the human impact of the proposal, stating: 'We recognise the impact this proposal will have on our employees, their families, and the community.' A 45-day collective consultation with trade unions and employee representatives is now underway.
The Staffordshire facility, part of the Ideal Standard brand acquired in March 2024, remains the UK's only large-scale ceramics manufacturing operation, producing millions of toilets and basins annually. The announcement follows a period of "record breaking" financial results, including a 12% revenue rise and 3.2% operating profit increase in the first half of 2025, attributed to the group's strategic realignment.
