The European Union's market for furnishing articles, furniture and cushion covers is projected to grow steadily over the next decade, reaching an estimated $3.4 billion in nominal wholesale value by 2035, according to a new report from IndexBox.

The forecast anticipates a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of +1.2% in volume and +2.1% in value between 2024 and 2035. By the end of the period, market volume is expected to total 223K tons, reflecting a sustained demand for home furnishing products across the bloc.
In 2024, EU consumption of furnishing articles, furniture and cushion covers was estimated at 195K tons, matching 2023 levels but marking a -2.2% decline from the 2022 peak of 199K tons. Market value rose to $2.7 billion, up 2.5% year-on-year, and 55.7% higher than in 2015.
Romania, Belgium and Poland dominated consumption in 2024, accounting for 47% of the total volume. In value terms, Romania led with $708 million, followed by Poland ($329 million) and Belgium. Belgium recorded the fastest growth among top consumers, with a CAGR of +16.9% in volume and +13.6% in value since 2013. Per capita consumption was highest in Romania (2,303 kg per 1,000 persons), Belgium (2,160 kg) and Hungary (742 kg).
EU production declined in 2024 to 175K tons, down -8.9% from 2023's record 192K tons. In value terms, production dropped to $2.6 billion, though it remains 72.2% higher than in 2015. Romania, the Netherlands and Belgium accounted for 57% of production, with Belgium showing the strongest growth at a CAGR of +19.9%.
Imports fell for the second consecutive year, down -13.6% to 73K tons in 2024, following a peak of 106K tons in 2022. Import value also declined to $802 million. Germany and France were the largest importers by volume, while in value terms Germany ($148 million), France ($145 million) and Italy ($56 million) led the rankings. Romania recorded the fastest growth in import value with a CAGR of +13.1%. Average EU import prices dropped -5% to $10,999 per ton, with Romania paying the highest average price ($19,094 per ton).
Exports also contracted sharply, with volume falling -35.8% to 53K tons in 2024 from 83K tons in 2023. Export value declined to $435 million, down from a 2018 peak of $790 million. The Netherlands dominated export volumes (56%), while Germany, Spain and Poland held significant shares. In value terms, Germany ($81 million), Spain ($76 million) and Poland ($45 million) led, with Italy achieving the highest average export price ($32,889 per ton).
Despite these short-term contractions in trade flows, the report underscores a resilient long-term growth trajectory for the EU's furnishing article, furniture and cushion cover sector, supported by steady consumer demand and regional production capacity.
