Vietnam defies tariff headwinds as wood exports surge

Vietnam's wood and wood product exports have continued to grow despite global trade pressures and new US tariff measures. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the sector achieved export earnings of US$8.21 billion in the first half of 2025, up 8.9% year-on-year.

The United States remained the leading export destination, accounting for 55.6% of total export turnover, followed by Japan (12.6%) and China (10.4%). The industry also recorded a trade surplus of US$6.5 billion, a 6.7% increase from the same period last year.

While US countervailing and minimum tariff policies have posed challenges, Vietnamese exporters have shown resilience. Phung Quoc Man, chairman of Bao Hung Co Ltd and president of the Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City, stated that export performance "exceeded expectations" due to US clients increasing inventory in anticipation of further tariffs.

Man noted that the US measures were applied to multiple countries, not just Vietnam, which helped maintain order flow as importers sought to protect their supply chains.

Vietnam's wood sector remains one of the top five agricultural groups with the largest trade surplus, showing strong adaptability amid shifting global trade dynamics.
