The former Monastery of Santa Scolastica in the medieval village of Buggiano Castello has been transformed into La Monastica Resort & SPA, a serene retreat nestled in the Tuscan hills. This luxury destination now combines heritage architecture with contemporary wellbeing, and its atmospheric charm after dark is thanks in no small part to Italian lighting brand Platek.

Inaugurated in August 2024, La Monastica offers 19 rooms and suites, a refined spa, two swimming pools, a restaurant and a terraced garden that cascades across nine historical levels. The terraces, which overlook the Valdinievole with panoramic views, are bordered by ancient stone walls and feature verdant plantings that shift with the seasons.
Lighting plays a crucial role in the resort's identity, blending discreetly into the natural contours and textures of the site. 'Flamingo elegantly lights up the facades of the ancient walls and much of the walkways, while Mini and Micro accentuate the towering trees across the various garden zones, all without disturbing the tranquillity of the place,' reads the company's release.
The products selected, from the Flamingo collection by designer Sara Moroni, as well as Platek's own Mini and Micro recessed ranges, were personally chosen by Stefania Arrighetti, CEO of Monastero del Castello Srl, and her father, who oversaw the design process.
The resort's lighting design emphasises what Platek describes as 'a type of lighting that does not dominate but rather caresses, turning the space into a nocturnal canvas where nature is the main subject.' In particular, the light reflecting on the surface of the misted-water pools amplifies the calm, while the sounds of birdsong and citrus-scented air offer a full sensory escape.

Beyond aesthetics, Platek prioritises sustainability and energy efficiency. 'For Platek it is essential to guarantee an efficient, environmentally conscious lighting, reducing light pollution and optimising energy consumption,' the company explains, noting that such goals are made possible through dedicated in-house R&D in optics.
This project showcases how Platek's design-led yet sustainable solutions can enhance architectural heritage without disrupting the natural or historic fabric. Combining technology, aesthetics and respect for the landscape, Platek creates outdoor environments that are, above all, harmonious and deeply human.
