Gloom lingers over Danish households as consumer confidence stalls

Danish consumer confidence remains in negative territory, with the headline indicator holding steady at -15.7 in July, according to the latest figures from Statistics Denmark. While largely unchanged from June's figure of -15.1, the stagnation highlights continued concern among consumers about both personal finances and the broader economy.

Of the five sub-indicators used to calculate the overall consumer confidence figure, three declined in July. The only bright spot was a slight improvement in consumers' perception of their current financial situation. Yet overall sentiment remains subdued, reflecting anxiety over inflation, job security and the economic outlook.

Consumers continue to take a bleak view of Denmark's national economy. The indicator measuring sentiment about the country's current economic conditions is at -21.9, close to the six-month average of -23.5. Views on personal finances also remain negative, with the assessment of households' current economic situation at -11.1.

Consumers show little optimism about the future. "Consumers still expect their family's financial situation to be worse a year from now than it is today," notes Statistics Denmark, with the indicator for personal financial expectations next year falling to -5.8. Expectations for the national economy are even more pessimistic, standing at -23.5.

Caution also extends to spending. The indicator on purchasing major consumer goods—such as televisions and washing machines—stands at -16.0. This is below the six-month average of -14.2, suggesting continued restraint on discretionary purchases.

Employment concerns persist. 'Consumers continue to expect that unemployment will have increased a year from now compared to today,' states the report. The unemployment expectations indicator currently stands at 11.0, indicating that more people foresee a rise in joblessness over the coming year.

The survey, conducted through telephone and online interviews with a representative sample of Danes aged 16 to 74, shows that while inflation expectations remain high, the public remains cautious in both spending and saving behaviour. Although some households report an ability to save, uncertainty continues to weigh heavily on consumer sentiment.

The ongoing lack of momentum in consumer confidence suggests that Europe's interior and lifestyle sectors may face persistent headwinds, as households prioritise essential costs and defer larger home-related investments. Until broader economic confidence returns, demand for significant home purchases is likely to remain subdued.
