Aquinos Bedding Germany, known for its renowned sleep brand Schlaraffia, has filed for insolvency. The Bochum District Court initiated preliminary proceedings on 11 July 2025, appointing attorney Frauke Heier as provisional insolvency administrator.

The move follows months of industry speculation over financial instability, including missed deliveries and reports of retail space being cleared. Despite this, Managing Director Carlos Manuel Ribeiro de Aquino remained silent until the court filing.
Aquinos Bedding Germany was acquired in 2022 by Portugal's Aquinos Group from the Belgian Recticel Group. Schlaraffia, based in Bochum, is one of the most recognised names in the sleep sector, offering mattresses, beds, and slatted frames. The company had recently focused on recyclability.
Under file number 80 IN 500/25, all asset disposals now require administrator consent. Creditors must redirect payments to the provisional administrator, who will assess prospects for restructuring.
Aquinos Group, headquartered in Sinde, Portugal, employs over 5,000 staff across 20 European sites and recently reported over €600 million in turnover. In May 2025, it sold its Belgian bedding subsidiary to Somnis Bedding, surprising industry watchers.
The future of Schlaraffia remains uncertain as insolvency proceedings unfold.
