German furniture supplier files for insolvency amid sector strain

A German furniture components manufacturer has filed for insolvency, marking a significant development in the furniture supply chain. The company, based in Herford, submitted its application to the Bielefeld District Court on 25 June 2025. Managing directors Ralf Schwertner and Achim Eikmeyer filed the request, and Dr. André Wehner of Pluta Rechtsanwalts GmbH has been appointed as preliminary insolvency administrator.

Founded in 1995, Gela-Form specialises in foil-coated fronts and moulded components for kitchen, bathroom, and hallway furniture. It supplies both the industrial furniture sector through serial production and bespoke solutions, as well as individual furniture makers, shopfitters, exhibition builders, and joineries.

The company relocated from Bad Oeynhausen to Herford in 2000, expanding its production space, capacity, and product range. In November 2024, Gela-Form had taken over operations from the insolvent LignoSmart Holztechnik GmbH, a move that was seen as a growth step at the time.

Gela-Form's financial troubles reflect broader challenges in the furniture manufacturing sector, with rising costs and market consolidation impacting smaller and mid-sized suppliers across Europe. The continuation of operations will depend on the outcome of the restructuring process now underway.
