The business in question is Old Town Furniture & Mattress Co. Emergency crews responded around 7:30 p.m. after thick smoke was observed coming from the store located at 418 Hancock Street. The incident was confirmed by Saginaw City Councillor Carly Hammond.
The fire occurred on the same day the longstanding furniture retailer was scheduled to cease operations permanently. The store, a fixture in the community for nearly five decades, had recently announced its closure, marking the end of an era in local furniture retail.
No additional furniture businesses were reported to be affected by the fire. The extent of the damage and the cause of the blaze have not yet been disclosed.
Old Town Furniture had built a reputation over the years for offering home furnishings and mattresses to residents of Saginaw and surrounding areas. Its sudden and dramatic closure underscores a turning point for the city's independent furniture trade.
Authorities are expected to release further details following an investigation into the incident.
