Polish furniture industry braces for impact as US tariff threat looms

Poland's furniture export sector, the largest in Europe and third globally, is facing serious disruption due to potential new tariffs from the United States. With exports surpassing $11 billion in 2024, the industry is a key pillar of Poland's economy, and the US remains one of its most important markets.

The Trump administration has proposed sweeping tariffs on EU imports, including a 50-percent tariff on goods following a stalled trade deal. An initial 90-day pause ends on 9 July, with European diplomats warning that a 10-percent blanket tariff may still be imposed.

Furniture companies like NOTI, based in Poznań, are concerned. CEO Dominik Czylkowski noted that the US is a "big market" and that the current trade climate is "more difficult, more complex and harder for business" than expected. The firm employs around 150 people and is struggling to navigate the uncertainty.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned the tariffs could reduce national GDP by nearly 0.5 percent. However, others like Jozef Szyszka of Meble Polska Fair believe the overall impact may be limited, as exporters diversify to other markets. Industry leaders remain hopeful for a diplomatic solution to prevent large-scale economic fallout.
