Ikea lawsuit seeks destruction of Biltema products and four million kronor fine

Ikea has filed a lawsuit against Biltema, accusing the retailer of copyright infringement and unfair marketing. The dispute centres on Biltema's alleged copies of two well-known Ikea products: the "Förstiktig" children's stool and the "IKEA PS 2002" water jug.

According to the filing in Sweden's Patent and Market Court, Ikea argues that Biltema's versions closely resemble the originals, constituting a breach of intellectual property rights. The company claims the situation is "a typical example of reputational swindling", accusing Biltema of exploiting Ikea's strong brand and design legacy.

Ikea had previously contacted Biltema multiple times to cease sales, but the products reportedly remained available. As a result, Ikea is now seeking a court-ordered sales ban, destruction of remaining stock, and a conditional fine of four million kronor. It also demands that Biltema cover up to 155,000 kronor in costs related to publicising the court ruling.

Biltema has since removed the items from its website. Both firms have declined further comment, citing the ongoing legal proceedings. Inter Ikea Systems stated it takes design protection "very seriously", while Biltema confirmed it would not comment during the litigation. The case remains under review by the court.
