Urbanjobs unveils interors for Scalla Restaurant

Renowned Istanbul-based design studio Urbanjobs has unveiled Scalla, a 120-seat luxury Mediterranean restaurant in Beykoz, offering a striking blend of spatial innovation and sensory experience. Rooted in the Italian word scala (staircase), the concept speaks to movement and shifting perspectives, an architectural language woven into every corner of the venue.

At the heart of Scalla is the Glass Curtain, a curvilinear architectural system inspired by the natural rhythm of the Mediterranean coast. 'This glass surface transcends the conventional understanding of boundaries, sometimes folding inward and at other times extending outward to serve various functions,' the studio explains. The Glass Curtain redefines traditional spatial limits, forming a breathable, fluid shell that reflects the coastal textures of Beykoz.

Supported by specially manufactured copper-coated aluminium profiles, the three-dimensional curves of the Glass Curtain are both an engineering feat and an aesthetic signature. This permeable boundary sets the tone for a layered spatial journey that unfolds throughout the restaurant.

Urbanjobs' Founder and Lead Designer Murat Dede describes this journey:
'Guests first pass in front of the bar and then the kitchen pass-through window before ascending to a higher level, offering a shift in perception. On their way back from the bathrooms toward the back of the restaurant, they re-engage with the interior before once again encountering the bar, reinforcing spatial continuity. Descending the steps, they first frame the wine cabinet and then, once again, the pass-through window.'

The bar serves as both a functional and emotional anchor, visible from multiple angles and designed with tactile materials and bespoke blue marble-effect cabinetry, finished with copper-toned hardware by Turnstyle Designs.

Scalla's ceiling becomes an architectural element in its own right, rising and falling to define space, interspersed with woven leather and exposed beams for intimacy and contrast. Lighting is dynamic, transitioning from natural daylight through the Glass Curtain to a theatrical evening glow via custom sconces and integrated LEDs.

The material palette throughout is warm and local: wood, leather, light-toned marble, and copper create an earthy harmony. Bespoke furnishings, custom wallcoverings by ARTE and Phillip Jeffries, and sculptural planting by Yunus Karma further enhance the sensory experience.

Scalla is not just a dining destination but 'a space that is both visually striking and profoundly human,' Urbanjobs states. Every curve, texture, and detail invites guests to explore, connect, and remember.
