Rivièra Maison bankrupt: 'We're devastated,' says Founder Henk Teunissen

The iconic Dutch interior brand Rivièra Maison has been declared bankrupt. Founder and director Henk Teunissen has confirmed this to the editorial team of Wonen360. He will respond in detail to the situation at a later stage. 'We are devastated,' he said, visibly shaken.

Founded in 1985, Rivièra Maison grew under Teunissen's leadership from a modest flower shop to an internationally recognised brand in the home furnishings industry. With a distinctive signature combining modern country style with craftsmanship and sustainability, the brand managed to retain a loyal customer base for years.

In earlier interviews with Wonen360 this year, Teunissen provided insight into the vision, challenges, and successes of the company. During the launch of the fall and winter collection 2025, he emphasised the changing consumer behavior: "Consumers buy less, but choose more consciously," Teunissen said in March. 'As a brand, we have a clear identity, and we stick to it. Customers are seeking quality and experience more than ever.'

He described the collection as a combination of warm, nostalgic elements and elegant, timeless designs that prioritise sustainability: 'For our furniture, we primarily use recycled wood, and we have been doing so for over twenty years, even before sustainability was on everyone's agenda.'

However, in 2025, market challenges such as inflation, higher logistics costs, and changing consumer behaviour were also central: 'Flexibility and customer focus are crucial to remain agile. We consciously choose more wholesale and are gradually scaling back our own retail. We only keep stores that offer real added value as a brand showcase,' he explained.

Anniversary Interview
In a detailed anniversary interview in March, where he celebrated his 40-year leadership at Rivièra Maison, Teunissen spoke proudly about building the brand and the role of his family in the company: 'Creating a brand is my greatest achievement, and I am proud of it. My children are now part of the company, and I am confident that they will continue to grow it.'

The bankruptcy comes as a major shock within the interior industry, especially given the long history and strong brand image that Rivièra Maison had built. Teunissen indicates he will later come with a statement. He must first engage in discussions with a trustee.

In bankruptcy, a trustee is appointed by the court. This person inventories the company's assets and debts, manages the estate, and tries to retain or sell as much value as possible. The goal is to partially repay creditors, if possible. The trustee also investigates how the bankruptcy arose and whether there is any mismanagement or liability. Furthermore, a potential restart is explored.
