'We’re positioning ourselves as an intrapreneurial company'

Light & Living appoints familiar face as new CEO

After nearly five years at the helm of Light & Living, Stephan van Kruisselberge is handing over the reins to Birger Nielsen. The Danish-born Birger is no stranger to the company. Since 2015, he has served as CEO of Present Time, one of Light & Living's sister brands. In 2021, he stepped into the role of Sales Director for the entire Light & Living Group. Now, with his appointment as Group CEO, overseeing brands including Leitmotiv, Karlsson, it's about RoMi, and Good&Mojo, a new chapter begins.

Birger brings with him a solid background in Economics and Marketing from CBS Business School in Copenhagen, along with years of experience in the interior design industry, primarily in commercial roles. One of his proudest achievements? The successful relaunch and restructuring of Present Time in 2015. That experience, he says, will be invaluable as he takes on this new leadership role, which he sees as filled with both challenges and opportunities.

'We're going to position ourselves as an intrapreneurial company,' Birger explains. 'That means we're constantly looking for new solutions and commercial opportunities from within our own organisation. Innovation is key.' He notes that the interior industry is still feeling the aftershocks of the pandemic. 'Demand has dropped, and the market is saturated. At the same time, there's a growing need for fresh, surprising products that offer real commercial value. That's where we come in.'

How exactly will Light & Living respond to this market shift? 'We're going to fine-tune our collections to better align with customer needs. Our approach will be simple, accessible, and versatile. The customer comes first, and we aim to be a smart, innovative partner that truly stands out,' says the new CEO.

Internally, Birger aims to foster a company culture built on creativity, entrepreneurship, and enjoyment. 'We're looking for clever solutions, keeping things straightforward, and encouraging an entrepreneurial spirit. But it also has to be fun, enjoying your work is essential to success.' This philosophy mirrors what inspires him most in design: 'I love quirky concepts, cool designs, bold use of colour, and products that offer value for money. Design should surprise and inspire,' he concludes.
