The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment in Ireland has launched a public consultation to review the country's current Furniture Fire Regulations. The aim is to ensure the regulatory framework remains "robust, effective, and aligned with modern consumer safety practices".

The consultation outlines two main options: to retain the existing Irish Furniture Fire Regulations or to repeal them and rely instead on the European Union's General Product Safety Regulations, which came into force at the end of 2024.
The review considers recent developments in the UK and reflects growing concern around the health and environmental impacts of flame retardants. The consultation also highlights the need to ensure any new approach aligns with broader EU safety standards while maintaining high levels of consumer protection.
Stakeholders are invited to submit written feedback by 5pm on 11 July 2025. Submissions can be sent to furniturefireconsultation@enterprise.gov.ie.
This review signals a potentially significant shift in how furniture safety is regulated in Ireland, with implications for manufacturers, retailers, and consumers across the sector.
