Dutch and Flemish trade unions deeply concerned about the future of industry in Europe

Dutch and Flemish trade unions and environmental organisations are deeply concerned about the future of industry in Europe. Companies are postponing investments in sustainability or closing down. Workers are at risk of losing out and the climate goals are getting out of sight. That is why the organisations demand ambitious and fair industrial policy with participation, both at European and national level. FNV reports.

Obstacles
Over the past two years, the organisations have worked intensively together in the 'My Company Future-proof' project. In the project, employees were guided while actively working on the future-proofing of their company. It showed that two things stand in the way of making the industry more sustainable: lack of participation and lack of political ambition, direction and decisiveness. FNV interim vice-president Petra Bolster: "The ball is now in politicians' court: wavering and half-hearted policies are putting the future of industry in Europe at risk, we need to work together and get the opportunities to do so."

Concrete solutions
To turn the tide, for the climate, Europe's autonomy and future-proof jobs, the organisations offer four concrete solutions:

  1. Greater participation in industrial policy
The participation of trade unions and environmental organisations is crucial for shaping industrial policy in a fair and promising way.
  2. Stable regulations and policies that encourage companies to go green
Only a green industry has a future. Companies will take the necessary steps only if governments steer them. This requires ambitious and consistent green regulations.
  3. Only support companies under strong social and green conditions
Government support should be tied to clear social and green preconditions: worker participation and a reliable transition plan as a requirement for support.
  4. Structural consultation with employees on climate and transition plans
Require companies to draw up a climate and transition plan in close consultation with trade unions. This should include agreements on job retention and retraining.
