'Virtually all Belgian DIY webshops break the law'

A recent investigation by the Federal Public Service (FPS) Economy shows that almost all Belgian DIY online shops are in violation of applicable consumer legislation. The toys and baby products sectors also went massively wrong. The inspection, carried out between 1 February 2024 and 6 January 2025, revealed one or more shortcomings in 242 of the 252 webshops investigated, accounting for 96 per cent of the total.

Multiple shortcomings per webshop
In total, the FPS found 1467 breaches, representing an average of six faults per webshop. Common problems were faulty or incorrect information about the right of withdrawal and the legal guarantee. Essential company information was also incomplete or incorrect in 42.5 per cent of cases. In addition, in 67.4 per cent of shops, the unit price was not always clearly stated. More than half of the cases (54.4 per cent) involved misleading commercial practices.

After the FPS intervened, most companies adjusted their webshops: 96.7 per cent of traders made the necessary corrections after an official warning.
