German interior sector eyes relief as furniture prices dip

The German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) confirmed that the country's inflation rate remained stable at +2.1% year-on-year in May 2025, driven largely by easing energy costs. This news offers a cautiously optimistic backdrop for the interior design and B2B furniture sectors, particularly as furniture and lighting prices recorded a slight decline.

'The inflation rate has stabilised, mainly due to the continued decline in energy prices,' stated Ruth Brand, President of Destatis. However, she added, 'By contrast, rising prices for food and services also had an inflationary effect in May.'

The stabilised inflation rate, unchanged from April, reflects broader economic pressures. However, notably for interior professionals, furniture and lighting became 0.5% cheaper compared to the previous year. Combined with a 0.3% month-on-month drop in the category "Furniture, lighting, appliances and other household accessories", this shift may provide cost relief for B2B buyers and specifiers operating under tight budget constraints.

Meanwhile, energy prices fell by 4.6% year-on-year, with household energy down 3.0%, driven by sharp declines in heating oil (-9.5%) and solid fuels (-5.4%). The deflationary trend in energy could ease manufacturing and logistics costs in the furniture industry.

Elsewhere, services costs climbed 3.4%, with particularly steep increases in healthcare and transport, indicating that operational overheads outside the supply chain remain elevated. The core inflation rate (excluding energy and food) stood at +2.8%, highlighting persistent price pressures in key goods and services.

While the broader consumer environment continues to experience sectoral price variability, the dip in furniture and lighting prices offers a rare margin of flexibility for interior design professionals sourcing or delivering projects across Germany and the Eurozone.
