Following three successful editions in London, Material Matters makes its Scandinavian debut with a curated showcase of design innovation and sustainable material exploration. Spark & Bell joins a distinguished list of exhibitors, presenting a statement chandelier that epitomises the studio's ethos of thoughtful design and material responsibility.
'I've always wanted to make the trip to 3daysofdesign so I'm hugely excited to be able to do that, while also bringing along our newest lighting creation,' said Emer Gillespie, founder of Spark & Bell. 'Spark & Bell being part of Material Matters Copenhagen feels just the right way to experience one of design's best events and to put our lighting on an international stage.'
The "Seraphín" chandelier is a multi-tiered centrepiece that uses crystalline lozenges made from Spark & Bell's in-house "Jewel" recycled plastic. The material, created by repurposing discarded CD cases, gives the light an ethereal quality through pill-shaped drops that diffuse and reflect light in cascading layers.
Designed by Gillespie and hand-assembled at the studio's Brighton workshop, the "Seraphín" reflects a commitment to durability and sustainability. Weighing in at over eight kilograms of upcycled plastic, the chandelier is also fully repairable via the studio's lifetime repair service and comes with a 10-year warranty, among the longest in the lighting industry.
'I believe good design is not just the beauty and functionality of the object,' added Gillespie. 'It is also about how that product is made, where its materials come from, its ability to endure use and what happens when it's no longer wanted. All these things must be considered in equality, that's thoughtful. There's always some fascinating and exciting perspectives at Material Matters, so I'm looking forward to being among them and sharing how our ethos has shaped 'Seraphín'.'
Material Matters is celebrated for showcasing avant-garde material experimentation. Previous editions have featured rope spun from human hair, post-consumer aluminium furniture, and mycelium-based designs.
'It feels like the right time to take Material Matters to a new audience,' said co-founders Grant Gibson and William Knight. 'We are incredibly happy to be showcasing a string of thoughtful installations and products. We believe it will be a wonderful show.'
