France urged to protect visible eco-contribution in furniture sector

Industry bodies in France are urging lawmakers to maintain the visibility of the eco-contribution on furniture products beyond its current deadline of 31 December 2025. The National Confederation of Home Equipment (CNEF), alongside Ecomaison, Valdelia, Valobat, and the DIY retailers' federation FMB, are backing two legislative amendments to secure this display mechanism, which they say ensures transparency, supports recycling, and stabilises the sector.

In place since 2013 under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), the system allows consumers to see the environmental fee included in the price of new furniture, used to fund the collection and recycling of old items. The five organisations claim this visible contribution model has enabled "excellent performance" in end-of-life furniture recovery, currently 97%—while also promoting durability and eco-design.

The partners argue that maintaining the visible display is essential to ensure stable funding, fight non-compliance from foreign sellers, manage legacy waste, and support local authorities. They assert the mechanism is "sincere and transparent for the consumer" and plays a crucial educational role. The call is made on behalf of 7,500 furniture retailers and their 65,000 employees across France.
