European Union levy on Chinese plywood puts market on edge

The European Commission definitively introduced anti-dumping measures on plywood from China on 6 June 2025. The import duties rise to 62.4 per cent and apply with immediate effect, including retroactive effect.

An exception to this high tariff has been made for Chinese manufacturer Pizhou Jiangshan Wood, which is subject to a lower tariff of 25.1 per cent. This company was the only one to fully cooperate with the European Commission's investigation. reports Wood World.

The move follows a lengthy investigation launched in late 2024. The Commission concluded that Chinese manufacturers were placing plywood on the European market at artificially low prices, leading to unfair competition. European plywood producers were significantly affected, partly because they already face the removal of Russian imports since 2022.

Chinese plywood occupies around 50 per cent of the market share in Europe. The new tariffs create great uncertainty among importers as they can be applied retroactively to previously imported material. The measures are provisionally imposed for six months, with the possibility of extension.
