IKEA secures planning approval for new England store debut

Swedish furniture giant IKEA has secured planning approval for signage at its forthcoming store in Chester, bringing the project a step closer to completion. The new outlet, set to open later this year, will be located at Greyhound Retail Park, occupying the site of a former Homebase unit.

Cheshire West and Chester Council granted advertisement consent for the store's external signage. In its report, the council stated the proposed signs are "acceptable with regards to visual amenity" and would "maintain current levels of public safety" due to their simple design and placement.

The Chester location is part of IKEA's broader strategy to expand its presence through smaller-format stores. First announced in April, the Chester site is one of three locations identified for development, alongside Harlow and Norwich.

Peter Jelkeby, chief executive of IKEA UK and Ireland, said: 'Harlow, Chester and Norwich have long been areas of interest to us, and we're looking forward to bringing the very best of the IKEA experience in a refreshingly compact format to these communities later this year.'

The Chester store will offer a more accessible and localised alternative to IKEA's traditional large-scale sites, reflecting the company's shift towards meeting evolving customer preferences and shopping habits.
