Hidden dangers unravel in baby pillow recall from Amazon

A baby pillow sold through online retailer Amazon has been withdrawn from sale due to serious safety concerns. The MiniDream Tummy Time Pillow, manufactured in China and marketed for newborns, was found to pose a "serious risk of entrapment and asphyxiation" according to the UK's Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS).

The product, which features ribbon loops, a teether, and detachable toys, was flagged for having fabric loops sewn into seams on the pillow, pillowcase, and detachable moon toy. These loops were deemed large enough for a child's finger to become caught and twisted, potentially causing injury.

Additionally, the plastic packaging used for the pillow was found to be below the minimum legal thickness, increasing the risk of suffocation. The product has been confirmed as non-compliant with the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.

The OPSS issued a formal statement warning: 'The product presents a risk of entrapment, as the pillow, pillowcase and detachable moon toy include fabric loops sewn into the side of one of the seams. The loops are large enough that a young child could easily insert their finger into them and twist, causing injuries.'

Consumers have been urged to cease use of the product immediately. Owners are advised to contact the original distributor for redress. The recall serves as a reminder of the growing scrutiny on products sold through third-party online marketplaces, particularly those involving infant safety.

The OPSS has reiterated the importance of compliance with UK safety regulations, particularly in the case of goods intended for vulnerable users such as babies and young children.
