A long-standing family-run business in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, has announced the closure of all its "Möbel Dahlmann" furniture stores and "Self" hardware and garden centres by the end of 2025. The decision marks the end of an era for a company with locations in Straelen, Kevelaer, and Kempen.

The entrepreneurs behind the business, Dahlmann self GmbH & Co. KG, Axel Dahlmann, 77, and Curd Louis Dahlmann, 67, released an emotional joint statement explaining their decision to retire due to age. 'With great sadness in our hearts, we have decided to close our business,' they wrote, adding their gratitude to loyal customers over the years. The announcement, accompanied by personal illustrations and messages, has been shared widely on social media.
A large clearance sale is planned across all remaining branches, with customers promised "many interesting discounts." The company has confirmed that all existing contracts will be honoured, and service continuity will be maintained through already arranged partnerships.
The Kleve location was closed in 2024, and while Kevelaer's hardware centre had already begun winding down in May 2025, it was initially believed that furniture stores in Straelen and Kempen would remain open. However, the family has since confirmed a full shutdown.
Julia Dahlmann, daughter of Curd Louis and a company employee, expressed regret over the closure. 'It was my lifelong goal to take over the company,' she told the Rheinische Post, 'but starting a family has changed my priorities.' She voiced particular concern for long-serving employees, many of whom have worked with the business for decades.
Exact dates for the clearance sales and closures have yet to be announced, but the company's departure marks a poignant end to a local retail institution.
