'A bold new showcase at the intersection of art and design'

Design Shanghai 2025 unveils "Collectible"

Design Shanghai, Asia's leading international design event, proudly announces the launch of Design Shanghai Collectible, a new exhibition dedicated to the intersection of collectible art and contemporary design. Set to take place at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre from 4–7 June 2025, this highly anticipated addition reflects the growing global demand for personalised and art-infused living environments.

As modern consumers seek ever more individualised interiors, limited-edition and one-of-a-kind design objects are emerging as key elements in both residential and commercial projects. In response, Design Shanghai Collectible will present a curated selection of collectible artworks including painting, sculpture, installation art, photography, furniture, and crafts.

'Through these artworks, interior designers infuse spaces with unique charm and personality, facilitating collaboration and exchange between the realms of design and art,' the organisers stated. This event aims to foster a deeper convergence between the design and art worlds, highlighting the rising prominence of collectible design within the broader creative industry.

The exhibition promises to showcase artistic expression across diverse mediums. As the curators emphasise, 'Leading collectible galleries will showcase works from multiple categories, including painting, sculpture, installation art, and photography.' This comprehensive approach ensures that Design Shanghai Collectible serves as a key platform for artistic exploration, industry collaboration, and collector engagement.

Among the highlighted exhibitors are several pioneering studios and galleries:

Katz Studio
At the heart of Katz Studio's philosophy lies "a profound appreciation for the inherent patterns of nature, a place where the elegance of nature's algorithms is seamlessly woven into the fabric of functional art." Based in the vibrant core of Mexico City, Katz Studio "crafts a dialogue between the organic and the engineered, an exploration that is as much about discovery as it is about creation."

PINWU Design Studio
Founded in 2004 by designers Lei Zhang, Jovana Zhang, and Christoph John, PINWU is known for its reimagining of traditional Chinese handicrafts. The studio's work spans "art installations, furniture, space, graphics and brand strategy." Their mission is to reinterpret heritage crafts through contemporary design applications, showcasing the living legacy of artisanal tradition.

Other notable participants include Cheng Yan Lacquerware Studio and Yanshan Art Center, both bringing their distinct regional and material perspectives into the global collectible design conversation.

Beyond the physical exhibits, Design Shanghai Collectible is positioned as a major contributor to the broader development of the creative sector. 'This event provides artists with increased opportunities for exhibition and market exposure, thereby contributing to the vibrant growth of the creative industry as a whole,' organisers said.

As the boundary between functional design and fine art continues to blur, Design Shanghai Collectible offers an essential platform where innovation, craftsmanship and aesthetics converge. The 2025 edition invites audiences to witness a new chapter in design culture, one that celebrates collectibility, creativity, and the art of living.
