A surge in UK online searches for "Greek garden ideas", up 250% in the past month, signals a rising trend as homeowners prepare to transform their outdoor spaces into tranquil Grecian retreats for summer 2025, according to new data analysed by innovative interiors brand Ruggable.
Charlotte Ford, interiors expert at Ruggable, explains the enduring influence of holiday destinations on interior design: 'Holiday destinations have always been an influential factor when it comes to summer interior trends. I believe this is down to the feelings these design elements evoke, creating a wellness-inducing interior that transports us to warmer climates and helps us reminisce about carefree days on holiday with our loved ones.'
Ford notes a shift from last year's Amalfi Coast-inspired interiors to a new focus on outdoor spaces: 'Last year, we brought touches of the Amalfi Coast into our living spaces with the Amalficore trend and, this year, it appears the Greek Islands are influencing our outdoor spaces, with Grecian Gardens set to be the trend of summer 2025.'
To achieve an authentic Grecian garden, Ford advises starting with a colour palette inspired by traditional Greek art. 'Cool blues and clean whites are synonymous with the architectural colours renowned with the luxury island of Santorini, as well as giving nod to the porcelain ornaments renowned with the work of Greek artisans,' she explains. She recommends a crisp white base layered with bright and lighter blue tones, applied through furnishings like striped rugs and porcelain plant pots to evoke the airy, breezy essence of the Greek coastline.
Adding texture and depth to the garden, Ford suggests incorporating draping techniques inspired by ancient Greek fashion. 'Toga dresses are a rich feature of Greek culture, with the draped style and carefully curated folds of the fabric creating an interesting visual that can be incorporated into your garden space to capture the essence of Greek fashion.' She recommends lightweight fabrics such as linen or chiffon as focal points, for example, a linen tablecloth draped with pleated folds over a garden dining table or chiffon pleated along fences to mimic the curtain drapes of Greek beach beds.
Natural materials also play a key role in the Grecian aesthetic. 'For the finishing touches to your Grecian garden, you should look to furnish it with natural materials that are found within the landscape of Greece. For example, stone, marble and wood are common materials used within Greek architecture and design,' Ford states. Using these materials in seating, tables, ornaments, or storage solutions helps create a cohesive and on-trend outdoor space.
