Nate Berkus shows how a little lamp can change everything

Interior designer Nate Berkus is reshaping how people think about kitchen lighting by championing an unconventional yet accessible idea: adding table lamps to kitchen countertops. Described as both "charming" and "practical," this approach introduces a warm, inviting ambiance to what is typically a utilitarian space.

Berkus shared his thoughts via Instagram and in his new book Foundations, explaining that counter lamps provide a "secondary source of light" that enhances atmosphere at all times of day, from early morning starts to late-night snacks. He values this layer of lighting for making kitchens feel "more relaxed, social, and intimate."

Far from a fleeting trend, this lighting solution is being embraced for its affordability and versatility. From cordless and rechargeable options to sculptural vintage-inspired designs, a counter lamp can serve as both functional light and decorative feature.

Design considerations are key. Under-cabinet areas may require shorter lamps for balance, while open countertops allow for taller, bolder styles. Berkus himself favours "vintage pyramid stone lamps" to add architecture and elegance to the space.

Brands like H&M Home, Pottery Barn, and Anthropologie offer designs ranging from classic marble to playful pops of colour. Options like the Addison Ross Bobbin Lamp or Wooj Design's Mini Wavy Lamp provide both practicality and statement-making style.

Ultimately, Berkus's advice positions counter lamps not just as decor but as a subtle way to signal that the kitchen is a space for more than cooking, it's also for comfort and connection.
