According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred on 16 May when deputies received multiple calls around 11 a.m. regarding a suspicious person and a vehicle collision, followed by a hit-and-run. Authorities later identified the alleged driver as a man who claimed he had been offered money to assist 36-year-old Steven Eberly with moving furniture.
While helping Eberly, the man reportedly discovered a body wrapped in a blanket inside one of the boxes. Disturbed, he attempted to flee in a truck, prompting Eberly to leap into the truck bed and smash windows in an effort to stop him, police said. The confrontation ended in a crash, after which Eberly fled on foot.
Eberly, found bleeding and walking nearby, was taken to hospital and later arrested on a charge of murder.
The victim has been identified as Luis Silva Mendez, a contractor who had reportedly been working at the residence. The cause of death is yet to be confirmed pending autopsy results. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive as of 19 May.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez described the incident as "strange" in a social media statement. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details have been released by officials.
