An independent homeware and interiors business is preparing to shut its physical store later this summer after nearly a decade on the high street. The decision follows ongoing difficulties faced by many small retailers, including reduced footfall, rising costs, and wider economic pressures.

Hilary & Alice confirmed the closure of its shop in Diss, Norfolk, citing a combination of challenges over recent years. These include the lasting impact of the pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis, and the overall decline of the local retail environment. The most personal challenge, however, was the passing of co-founder Amanda Kane in 2023, described by the business as "the biggest challenge for us."
The company will continue trading online and is shifting focus to its core services: furniture painting, upholstery, home staging, and interior design. A new wallpapering and decorating service will also be introduced. The business assured customers that this transition represents growth rather than retreat, stating: 'This isn't the end, it's just the next step in our evolution.'
Hilary & Alice praised its team for their dedication and thanked customers for their continued support. It described the next phase as one that \gives us the freedom to focus on what we're truly passionate about, helping you create homes filled with warmth, style, and personality.'
While giftware will no longer be available in-store, potential online sales in that category remain under consideration. The company will now offer in-home consultations for its services, reinforcing its commitment to personalised, hands-on design.
The brand's message is clear: it may be leaving the high street, but its creative mission and connection with customers are far from over.
