Construction has begun on a new sustainable housing project in Hasselager, south of Aarhus, where 120 public housing units will be built using prefabricated wooden modules. The DKK 121 million development is a joint venture between Brabrand Housing Association and the Housing Association of Aarhus Omegn.

The project comprises six four-storey point buildings, each with 20 apartments, totalling 8,610 m². The homes will range from one- to four-room units, designed to accommodate diverse lifestyles. The location, Kolt Østerparken, offers views of Aarhus and is situated between a forest and open fields.
Construction is being carried out by BM Byggeindustri A/S, with Skala Architecture and Vognsen Consulting Engineers also involved. Completion is expected in spring 2026.
The buildings are constructed from prefabricated wooden modules with slate and steel facades in subdued grey tones. According to the developers, the design achieves a low environmental impact of just 6.3 kg CO₂ equivalents per m² per year—nearly half the legal limit.
Jytte Gissel, chair of the Aarhus Omegn Housing Association, emphasised the project's environmental focus: 'It is crucial that we also consider environmental considerations in general construction from the start. By building with wood and using prefabricated modules, we reduce both material consumption and CO₂ emissions.'
The project highlights a growing shift in Danish public housing towards sustainable materials and modern design, aiming to meet climate targets while providing high-quality living spaces for a broad demographic.
