Søstrene Grene builds momentum with bold UK expansion

Danish homewares retailer Søstrene Grene has announced plans to double its UK store portfolio by 2027, aiming for 100 locations across the country. The expansion follows strong customer demand and consistent growth in physical retail engagement.

Three new stores are confirmed to open this summer in Canary Wharf, Harrogate, and Stirling, adding to the recent launch of the brand's Oxford Circus flagship in March 2025. This marks its fifth London location and its second in the capital's central shopping district, following the Tottenham Court Road opening in December 2023.

The UK growth forms part of a wider European strategy, with Søstrene Grene planning 60 store openings across the continent in 2025. The company currently operates over 330 stores in 17 countries.

To support this expansion, the retailer is investing £36m in its logistics infrastructure, including the development of a 45,000 sqm automated distribution centre in the Netherlands.

In addition to its physical store rollout, Søstrene Grene intends to grow its ecommerce presence and enter two new European markets next year.

Group CEO and co-owner Mikkel Grene stated: 'Customers in the UK have responded incredibly positively to the Søstrene Grene concept.' He added that the retailer continues to experience "strong footfall" and "high levels of engagement", with the appetite for new stores remaining high even in areas where other retailers are retreating.

Grene emphasised the brand's belief in physical retail, noting that meaningful in-store experiences still have a place in modern shopping. 'We see an opportunity to bring something different to the UK high street, at a time when fresh thinking is needed,' he said.

For the year ending April 2024, Søstrene Grene reported a 15% increase in pre-tax profits to £24m, underpinned by strategic investment and rising demand.
