IKEA officially opened the doors to its long-anticipated Oxford Street store today, marking a major step in the company's strategy to increase accessibility through smaller, centrally located formats. Housed within the Grade II listed building at 214 Oxford Street, the new store spans three floors and delivers a curated retail experience in the heart of one of the world's most iconic shopping destinations.
The extensive renovation of the building, led by Ingka Investments, the investment arm of Ingka Group, was part of IKEA's wider transformation strategy. The store forms part of the company's efforts to meet customers "where they live, work, and socialise," reflecting a bold new chapter for the Swedish home furnishing giant.
'Today we celebrate our new home on Oxford Street, a milestone in our journey to becoming more accessible. It will be an IKEA many know and love, with some new features exclusive to this iconic city centre store,' said Peter Jelkeby, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer, IKEA UK. 'Created in collaboration with real voices and with Londoners in mind, opening our doors is a landmark moment following a meticulous renovation and we are truly excited to share it.'
The Oxford Street location is IKEA's sixth in London and 22nd in the UK. With a retail space of 5,800 square metres, the store showcases 6,000 product lines, of which 3,500 are available for immediate takeaway. The entire IKEA range remains available online for home delivery.
Tolga Öncü, Ingka Retail Manager (COO) at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), added: 'Adding Oxford Street to the IKEA map is a special moment for us. This store, on one of the busiest and most well-known streets in the world, exemplifies our ambition to innovate our retail presence and bring IKEA to where our customers live, work, and socialise.'
The opening also created 150 new jobs, following unprecedented interest, with 3,730 applications received in just five days. Globally, IKEA has committed over EUR 5 billion in retail investments up to FY27 to upgrade existing stores and develop new formats that enhance customer convenience.
