Furniture buildings of 60 year old Danish retailer listed after bankruptcy

A well-known Danish furniture retailer has gone bankrupt, leaving many customers frustrated after being unable to collect goods they had already paid for. The collapse has resulted in debts of DKK 40 million, though an inventory valued at DKK 20 million has helped to reduce some of the financial damage through successful liquidation sales.

The commercial property that previously housed the retailer is now up for sale for DKK 14.5 million. The building offers 5,000 square metres of retail space, along with modern staff facilities, a canteen, and a glass-fronted entrance with adjacent parking. According to sales details, the premises are in well-maintained condition.

The store in question is Bolighuset Werenberg, a family-owned business established in 1964 and based in Brenderup, west of Odense. The property is owned by Ejendomsselskabet Werenberg A/S, a separate company under the ownership of Torben Werenberg, and is therefore not included in the bankruptcy estate. Torben Werenberg took over the family business in 2005.

Rental income for the property company amounted to DKK 2.2 million in the financial years 2021/22 and 2022/23. In earlier years, it had reached DKK 2.6 million, according to financial documents reviewed by Wood Supply.

The bankruptcy was declared in October 2024. Despite earlier annual revenue exceeding DKK 18 million, the company cited the economic crisis and an unsuccessful digital transition as key reasons for its failure.

'We have fought to the end,' said Torben Werenberg at the time, noting that continuing losses had made future operations unsustainable despite the company's efforts and support from financial advisers.
