A family-run furniture manufacturer based in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2025. Founded in 1965 by brothers Michael and Frank Steed, the company is recognised for its handcrafted, high-quality upholstery and has played a key role in upholding the region's reputation as the UK's Centre of Manufacturing Excellence.

Steed Upholstery, now led by second-generation siblings Caroline and Roderick Steed, the business continues to uphold the founding values of craftsmanship, quality, and customer care. Caroline Steed remarked: 'As the company celebrates 60 years, we remain committed to preserving the time-honoured skills and traditions that make our upholstery special, while looking ahead to an exciting future.'
Many long-serving staff members contribute to Steed's legacy, including John Higgins, a supervisor who joined the business in 1988. He said: 'The care and attention that is poured into every piece of furniture we create reflect the passion we all share for our craft.'
The company remains an active member of the Long Eaton Guild of Furniture Manufacturers and will exhibit at the Spring and Autumn Long Point exhibitions in May and September. These trade-only events are considered important fixtures in the UK furniture industry calendar.
Guild chairman Andrew Mitchell praised Steed's milestone, stating: 'Steed Upholstery's 60-year journey is a remarkable achievement and a reflection of the craftsmanship and dedication that define Long Eaton's furniture-making industry.'
