Ikea Austria expands second-hand initiative with return option

Ikea Austria is strengthening its commitment to sustainability by enhancing its "Second Life Shop" initiative, allowing customers to return most second-hand items, a move aimed at addressing practical concerns around used furniture. This includes former display pieces and discontinued products sold at reduced prices in Ikea stores. All items are quality-checked by Ikea staff.

A recent study conducted by Ikea and Marketagent in 2023 revealed that 60% of Austrians have purchased second-hand furniture, and 89% believe in giving furniture a second life. However, obstacles remain. Roughly 30% worry about furniture being damaged, and over a third cite the lack of return or exchange options as a deterrent.

To alleviate these concerns, Ikea now permits returns for most items purchased through the "Second Life Shop", excluding mattresses, electrical appliances, and buyback service items. The buyback items, however, can still be re-evaluated online for another offer, providing an opportunity for a further 'second life' in exchange for an Ikea gift card.

FangFang Li, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer at Ikea Austria, stated: 'Our return option in the "Second Life Shop" hits exactly this nerve: It enables a cost-effective and resource-saving solution for everyone involved, with the added security of quality and change of mind.'

To further promote circular economy practices, Ikea will host a large flea market on the roof of its Vienna Westbahnhof location on 10 May, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, customers can enjoy a 10% discount on all "Second Life Shop" products from 25 April to 10 May, both online and in stores.
