Global steel production increased

Global steel production increased in March, after a decline in the first two months of this year. In total, the 69 countries that produce steel made 166.1 million tons of steel in March, which is 2.9 percent more than in the same month last year. However, in the first three months of 2025, production had decreased by 2.5 percent. This is according to figures from the World Steel Association, an international organisation of steel producers.

In the European Union, there was a slight increase of 0.2 percent compared to a year earlier. In the United States, production decreased by 1.5 percent, while Japan saw a contraction of 4.9 percent.

In Germany, steel production fell by 11.7 percent in March compared to last year, although the decline was smaller than in February.

In China, the world's largest steel producer, production increased by 4.6 percent in March to 92.8 million tons. This means that production in China has increased by 0.6 percent so far this year.
