The European Union's wooden kitchen furniture market is expected to maintain a steady growth trajectory over the next decade, despite recent declines in imports and exports, according to a newly released report by market intelligence provider IndexBox.
The report, titled EU - Wooden Furniture Of A Kind Used In The Kitchen - Market Analysis, Forecast, Size, Trends and Insights, forecasts that market volume will reach 119 million units by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of +0.7%. In terms of value, the market is projected to grow at a faster pace, with a CAGR of +2.6%, reaching $13.1 billion by 2035.
Current market overview
In 2024, consumption of wooden kitchen furniture in the EU rose significantly by 8.3% to 110 million units, compared to 2023. This growth, however, comes after a dip from the peak volume of 115 million units recorded in 2022. In value terms, the market saw a sharp contraction, falling 15.6% year-on-year to $9.8 billion.
Germany remains the dominant consumer, accounting for approximately 35% of total volume, followed by Italy and France. 'Germany, Italy and France constituted the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2024, with a combined 58% share of the total market,' the report notes. Spain was highlighted as the fastest-growing market, with a CAGR of +21.9% over the review period.
On a per capita basis, Ireland topped the consumption ranking with 815 units per 1,000 people, ahead of Finland (595) and Germany (467). Spain also demonstrated strong per capita consumption growth at a CAGR of +13.0%.
Production trends
The EU's wooden kitchen furniture production rebounded in 2024 to 121 million units after a two-year decline. While the production volume is still below the 2019 peak of 158 million units, value trends have been more robust. The production value reached $11.7 billion in 2024, marking a 43.2% increase compared to 2020 levels, despite a sharp drop from the $14.1 billion peak in 2023.
Germany led production with 52 million units, followed by Italy and Poland. Germany's production showed a slight annual decline of -2.1%, whereas Poland increased output with a CAGR of +1.3%.
Trade performance
Imports and exports of wooden kitchen furniture in the EU both declined markedly in 2024. Imports fell by -32.8% to 31 million units, down from a 2022 peak of 50 million. In value terms, imports stood at $1.9 billion. France, Germany, and the Netherlands were the largest importers by volume. Ireland recorded the highest import growth, with a CAGR of +28.4% in units and +14.2% in value.
Exports dropped for the third consecutive year, down -32% to 42 million units. Export value also contracted sharply to $3.7 billion. Germany remained the largest exporter, accounting for 41% of total EU exports. The report states: "Germany ($1.8B) remains the largest wooden kitchen furniture supplier in the European Union, comprising 48% of total exports."
Export prices have shown resilience, rising by 2.1% in 2024 to $89 per unit. "From 2013 to 2024, wooden kitchen furniture export price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2%," with Germany leading the price growth (+7.7% CAGR).
