The Drewry World Container Index (WCI) has risen 3% this week to reach $2,265 per 40ft container, according to the latest assessment by Drewry Supply Chain Advisors. This uptick reflects growing market pressure driven by tightening capacity and the looming impact of tariffs.

Despite the recent gain, the index remains 78% below its peak of $10,377, recorded in September 2021 during the pandemic-driven surge. Nevertheless, it sits 59% above the 2019 pre-pandemic average of $1,420, signalling continued volatility in the post-COVID global shipping landscape.
The year-to-date (YTD) average for 2025 now stands at $2,944 per 40ft container—$55 higher than the 10-year average of $2,889, a figure skewed by the extraordinary market conditions between 2020 and 2022.
