The market for design flooring has grown steadily in recent years. Despite a downturn in the construction industry, demand for LVT flooring and other design solutions remains high. German experts predict that 2025 will be a year of recovery and further innovation. So reports German online news platform Boden, Wand und Decke, which spoke to several entrepreneurs about developments in the sector.
According to Volkmar Halbe(pictured), president of the Association of Manufacturers of Elastic Floor Coverings (FEB), designer floors have not yet reached their peak. Although the sector is feeling the effects of a decline in new construction and renovation, the impact remains relatively limited. The market is expected to bottom out in 2024 and pick up again from 2025.
Mirko Bachmann, marketing director at Forbo Flooring, confirms this trend: 'LVT flooring remains in demand and continues to grow, although the pace is more moderate.' He points to competition from Asia and the need for European manufacturers to stand out with quality and product diversity.
Sustainability as a driving force
A key trend within the market is the shift towards sustainable flooring solutions. Céline Quervel of Classen Group stresses that demand for high-quality, hard-wearing and ecologically sound flooring is growing rapidly. This is partly due to a critical look at low-cost SPC flooring and a greater interest in hybrid flooring solutions.
Oliver Kluge of Windmöller GmbH also sees that innovation in design, quality and functionality is keeping the market dynamic. The company will soon launch the new wineo 800 collection, which responds to these trends.
Technological innovations
In addition to sustainability, technological innovations play a major role. Christoph Wellekötter of Parador sees a growing demand for phthalate-free and biodegradable materials. At the same time, improved surface finishes provide better scratch resistance and ease of maintenance.
SPC floors remain a popular choice because of their stability and versatility. Bernhard ter Hürne, managing partner at ter Hürne, predicts that PVC-free flooring concepts will experience higher sales growth in the coming years. In addition, designer wooden floors remain in demand, especially in the DACH region.
Focus on design and functionality
When designing new collections, the focus is on natural materials, matt surfaces and realistic wood and stone looks. Windmöller sees particular demand for oak designs and subtle concrete looks. Parador is capitalising on the trend of herringbone and chevron patterns, while Forbo Flooring is betting on recycled materials and low emission values.
The market for designer flooring remains competitive, and companies are betting on product quality, service and innovative applications to differentiate themselves from cheaper alternatives. According to Herbert Kendler of tilo GmbH, a well thought-out product strategy and consistent innovation are key to success.
