Salone del Mobile Milano highlights its economic and environmental impact

For the first time, Salone del Mobile.Milano has released an in-depth report titled Milan Design (Eco) System, developed in partnership with Politecnico di Milano. This annual study examines the broader economic, environmental, and cultural impacts of the renowned design event. Focused on sustainability and inclusion, the report provides a comprehensive overview of Salone's influence, offering valuable insights to guide future strategies for both the fair and the design community.

Using data from the 2024 edition, the report adopts a rigorous methodology involving 37 data providers, 86 sources, and over 500 field observations. The findings highlight the event's global appeal, with 370,824 attendees—65.6% of whom came from outside Italy.

'The Chamber of Commerce has estimated revenue of 275 million euros. However, the impact and the effects of the Salone on the city go way beyond this financial figure. It is also thanks to the many opportunities for encounters inspired by the Salone, that the entire city is involved.' Giuseppe Sala, the mayor of Milan comments in the opening of the report.

This international reach has contributed to increased visitor-related emissions, despite efforts to promote public transport, which accounted for 60% of attendee travel. Salone's digital strategy further amplified its global engagement, achieving 90 million online impressions and a 32% rise in website traffic compared to the previous year.

Attilio Fontana, president of the Lombardy Region also adds, 'Measuring the impacts of Salone del Mobile.Milano is proof of great far-sightedness. It means recognising, in the socio-economic and cultural scope of the event, a beneficial driving force for the development of the territory.'

The report underscores Salone's sustainability efforts through initiatives such as its membership in the UN Global Compact and ISO 20121 certification. Green Guidelines were implemented to reduce the fair's environmental footprint, and successful collaborations, such as the recycling of an EPS installation with Salotto NY, demonstrated innovative solutions. However, the data also revealed a 5.2% rise in waste collection during Design Week 2024, from 12,757 tons in 2023 to 13,425 tons, underscoring the need for ongoing improvements.

Beyond environmental concerns, the report highlights the economic benefits of Milan Design Week. A Politecnico di Milano survey revealed that participants included companies, design studios, creative collectives, and architecture firms. Together, they contributed to an estimated €275.1 million in revenue, representing a 13.7% increase compared to 2023. This growth is largely attributed to the influx of international visitors.

Salone also prioritised accessibility and inclusion, introducing reduced ticket prices for students. This initiative led to a 28.6% increase in student attendance, encouraging broader participation in the design industry. Maria Porro, President of Salone del Mobile.Milano, described the report as 'a vital tool to foster awareness and guide the strategies that shape the future of the event.'

Looking ahead, the 63rd edition of Salone del Mobile promises expanded programming, coinciding with the Euroluce biennial. Highlights will include Robert Wilson's multimedia installation Mother at the Museo della Pietà, paying tribute to Michelangelo's Pietà. The event will also feature expanded talks, roundtables, and an international lighting forum, further fostering industry dialogue.

Innovative exhibition designs, such as Lombardini22's neuroscience-informed approach at Salone 2024, reflect the event's commitment to continuous improvement. The report's findings provide a foundation for Salone to refine its environmental strategies while maintaining its role as a key platform for the global design community. With sustainability, cultural programming, and economic impact at the forefront, Salone del Mobile continues to shape Milan Design Week as an unparalleled global design event.
