A hostel with charm for tourists in the heart of Oslo

A warm and colourful welcome awaits visitors at Bunks at Rode, a hostel with a unique charm for tourists in the heart of Oslo. In this relaxed and cosy atmosphere, Polyflor Palettone PUR with a modern mix of soothing hues contributes to an unforgettable stay in the Norwegian capital."

Location: Oslo, Norway

Products used: Palettone PUR, Expona Commercial PUR

Sector: hospitality & leisure

Located in the trendy Rodeløkka district in Grünerløkka, close to the beautiful Botanical Garden in Tøyen, this modern accommodation complex opened its doors in summer 2024. It offers much more than just a place to stay. This 11-storey building uniquely combines vibrant dormitories, private studio flats, social spaces and a spectacular rooftop terrace with panoramic views.

Founded in 1975, Bunks at Rode is a modern hostel concept of the Anker Foundation (Stiftelsen Anker), aiming to improve the living conditions of students in Oslo. Since then, the foundation has developed further in the hospitality sector with the establishment of Anker Hotel and Anker Hostel.

More recently, Bunks at Rode (formerly Anker Apartment) was created as a modern hostel concept offering the ultimate social experience for budget-conscious visitors, with a renewed focus on community. The interior design is the work of Åse Jerrhag, Project Manager & Partner at Hødnebø Prosjekt, Oslo, who brings extensive experience in interior design. Although Bunks at Rode was the first hostel project for Hødnebø Prosjekt, the assigned Design Team had previously carried out similar projects, including a boutique hotel in Risør, Norway.

Bunks at Rode provided a design brief that was relaxed and free-flowing. Jerrhag was aware of the predominantly young target group and the desire to provide them with an enjoyable environment. Therefore, her design team created a unique, progressive interior to meet these needs.

When choosing the flooring, it had to be easy to maintain and withstand the hustle and bustle of the many visitors. Already familiar with Polyflor's products, Jerrhag specified balanced shades from its Palettone collection, alongside a popular Expona Commercial option, to match the hostel's exceptional interior design.

Lothe & Motzfeldt, based in Drammen, Norway, and led by Vidar Trogstad Larsen, provided the floor installation. His team spent many hours removing the existing floor and preparing the subfloor before the new installation began.

The cheerful floor design included a custom-made water jet cut in the foyer with the word 'HELLO.' as an eye-catcher to welcome guests. Cut-outs in the floor added colourful accents to highlight toilets and other shared areas. For added detail and finish, the team integrated contrasting floor tones around the pillars.

"It was a pleasure to work with this striking floor selection, and we were immensely pleased with the result," Larsen said. Since opening, Bunks at Rode has welcomed visitors from all over the world, who have enjoyed the relaxed, social atmosphere and optional weekly activities. Polyflor Palettone fits perfectly with the overall design by Interior Designer Hødnebø Prosjekt. The creatively laid floor attractively complements the mix of bright pink furniture, abstract wall art and neon signs, all combined with neutral tones.

"It was an honour to be involved in this innovative and exciting project," said Jerrhag, looking back on her experience. "Each floor of the hostel offers something unique, while blending together perfectly, from the ground-floor foyer to the rooftop terrace. "Our choice of flooring from Polyflor undoubtedly played a big role in realising our vision for the project. With Palettone, we could choose from a wide spectrum of attractive shades, resulting in an exceptional hostel that stands out from the other accommodation options in Oslo."

The design team's final choices were as follows:

Polyflor Palettone - Fired Ochre (8642)

Polyflor Palettone - Sugar Candy (8627)
