Maersk raises profit forecast for 4th time

A.P. Møller-Maersk has revised its profit forecast for the current year for the fourth time in 2024. This was previously done in May, June and August. The Danish transport company now expects an operating profit (EBITDA) of between $11 billion and $11.5 billion. This is an increase from the previous forecast, which expected a profit of $9 billion to $11 billion.

Nieuwsblad Transport (NT) points out that Maersk was even gloomier about the outlook at the beginning of the year, with an expected operating profit of only $1 billion to $6 billion. The group feared that container shipping would suffer from disruptions in Asia-Europe traffic, mainly due to the threat of Houthi rebels, who could block the normal shipping route via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

However, the spring showed that these disruptions actually pushed up container rates. The logistical uncertainty caused shippers to start importing Christmas supplies earlier, leading to the first increase in the profit forecast in May.

Maersk's full quarterly results will be published on 31 October.
