Louis Vuitton is launching two updated versions of its iconic bed chest, designed by artistic directors Nicolas Ghesquière and Pharrell Williams. Introduced in 1868, these collaborations have given the original bed chest a new, modern look, taking luxury comfort to the next level.
Pharrell Williams gave the bed chest an updated look with a classic Monogram tent exterior and a lightweight aluminium and beechwood folding bed frame. The design features a four-piece mattress with memory foam for extra comfort. The inside of the box is embellished with vibrant red and white stripes, and the mattress and cushions include embroidery with the text "LV Lovers". Nicolas Ghesquière's version has a subtle, sophisticated finish with engraved metal plates and a floral pattern on the mattress, combining visual softness with the robustness of the materials.
Historical significance
Louis Vuitton's original bed chest was designed in the 19th century to provide travellers with a comfortable sleeping option during their travels. Originally launched in 1868 and patented in 1885, the chest was a pioneer in offering portable luxury. One of the first models was made for Italian explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza and was designed to withstand harsh conditions thanks to its zinc and copper construction.
Exhibition and awards
The modern versions of the bed trunks were recently unveiled by Elite Traveler and are on display in France. Nicolas Ghesquière's Bed Trunk, worth $257,000, will be on display at the Louis Vuitton shop in Saint-Germain-des-Prés from 20 September to 6 October. Pharrell Williams' version, priced at $221,000, will be presented at the Savoir Rêver Louis Vuitton event at the Hôtel Cheval Blanc in Paris from 21 September to 4 October.
