In recent months, air cargo analyst Wenwen Zhang has observed an unprecedented increase in demand for air cargo, driven mainly by Chinese e-commerce giants such as Temu. This rising demand has led to a significant increase in air freight prices, with rates rising by 20% over the past year. In particular, the route between China and Europe saw a sharp increase of 34%.

According to an expose by business magazine Forbes, companies such as Shein and Temu ship as much cargo by plane every day as the equivalent of 88 Boeing 777 flights. Despite air freight being five times more expensive than sea freight, this high cost does not seem to deter fashion brands.
However, the environmental cost of this choice is significant. Greenhouse gas emissions from air transport of a single garment are as much as 14 times higher than when it is transported by sea.
