Managing Director at Notto Krzysztof Dukat:

'The European market, particularly in countries like Germany, is not faring well'

As the furniture industry faces significant challenges across Europe, Krzysztof Dukat, Managing Director at the Polish furniture manufacturer Notto, offers insights into the current market landscape and how the company adapts to the challenges in the industry.

Current market conditions
Krzysztof candidly discusses the seasonal trends and ongoing challenges in the furniture industry. 'Typically, summer is a quieter period for furniture sales,' he explains. 'While this is expected, the real concern lies in what the upcoming weeks will bring. The European market, particularly in countries like Germany, is not faring well. We're witnessing a noticeable drop in orders compared to previous years. The big question is whether customers will return to stores with an interest in purchasing furniture as we approach September and October.'

Especially the German market is struggling, according to Krzysztof. 'There have not been any improvements since the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, it remains very calm. The main issue is the lack of foot traffic in stores. Every supplier can see this trend.' Jokingly, Krzysztof says: 'I often say that you can tell how bad things are just by looking at the empty parking lots. While smaller items like decorations are still selling, larger furniture pieces are struggling to move.'

The challenges are not confined to Germany. Krzysztof notes that similar conditions prevail across Europe, with the Benelux market also showing signs of stagnation. 'The Benelux market is incredibly important for us, but like the rest of Europe, it's much quieter than usual.'

Expectations for MOW Germany
Despite these challenges, Notto is preparing for the upcoming M.O.W. Germany fair with a positive outlook. 'M.O.W. is one of the most crucial events for us every year. It's an opportunity to meet both existing and potential new customers. Our primary goal is to showcase our latest designs, including new fabrics that are fresh and fashionable. It's also a valuable chance to engage with customers directly, which is essential in our industry. Additionally, we aim to find new customers, which is always a top priority.'

At M.O.W., Notto will be presenting a range of new products, though some are still in development. 'We're not 100% ready yet, but we're excited to show what's in the pipeline. Our focus will be on upholstery furniture, also sofas with sleeping functions, and furniture made from solid oak. These samples are specially prepared for the show, and we're still fine-tuning them.'

Adapting to industry trends
Krzysztof also reflects on current trends in the furniture industry and how Notto is adapting. 'While the broader market faces a deeper crisis, we're in a good position, partly due to new customers we acquired at last year's Brussels Furniture Fair. We're also investing heavily in production to reduce costs and improve efficiency. For example, energy costs are a significant challenge, especially in Poland, so we've invested in solar energy and other clean technologies. Additionally, we've upgraded our machinery and robotics to stay competitive.'

Looking ahead, Krzysztof is cautious yet optimistic. 'It's undoubtedly a difficult time for the furniture industry, but history shows that good times follow every crisis. While some companies may not be prepared, others will emerge stronger. At Notto, we're focused on staying healthy, mindful of market conditions, and committed to strategic investments.'
