In the Household Budget Survey (HBS) Year 2023, the average Spanish household expenditure increased by 3.8% in 2023, reaching 32,617 euros. Average expenditure per person grew by 4.3%, totalling 13,120 euros. The average household expenditure for the category 'furniture, household goods and maintenance' was 1,349 euros.

The highest-spending households (quintile 5) dedicated over a third of their budget (34.7%) to Transport, Restaurants and Hotels, and Leisure and Culture. The autonomous community with the highest average expenditure per person in 2023 was the Basque Country (15,572 euros).
Meanwhile, average expenditure per person was 13,120 euros, up by 4.3%.
Expenditure by household type
Household type significantly influences expenditure levels. Couples with children had the highest average expenditure in 2023, at 41,339 euros (1,742 euros more than the previous year).
In contrast, households with the lowest expenditure were those composed of a single person aged 65 or older (average of 21,060 euros) and single-person households under 65 years old (average of 21,614 euros), a difference of 554 euros between the two types of households.
All categories saw an increase in expenditure compared to the previous year. The largest increases were observed in single-person households under 65 years old, with a growth rate of 5.1% (1,048 euros more than the previous year), and couples without children (4.8%).
