Catawiki reveals vintage furniture is back in trend in Germany

Catawiki, the online auction platform, has released a study focusing on its rapidly expanding 'Interior' category, shedding light on the prevailing trends in Germany. One of the trends taking the spotlight at present is a resurgence of vintage furniture.

In 2023, over a quarter-million individuals in Germany participated in auctions within the Interior category. With more than 50,000 furniture items sold, sales witnessed a notable 45% surge compared to the previous year. This growth trajectory persists in the current year, with interior object sales in Germany witnessing a 45% uptick in the last quarter alone, compared to the same period last year.

Resurgence of vintage furniture
A recent survey conducted by the market research institute Appinio affirms the resurgence of retro and pre-owned designs. Half of the respondents reported owning used furniture (51%), with the younger demographic showing a particular affinity towards second-hand pieces. Online platforms (58%), traditional flea markets, and antique stalls, along with recommendations from acquaintances (49% and 35%, respectively), are the favoured avenues for vintage finds.

Sustainability and value enhancement
Morten Valther Graae Joergensen, Vice President Interiors at Catawiki, attributes the growing inclination towards online purchase of second-hand items to an increasing awareness of sustainability. With furniture waste in Europe exceeding ten million tons annually, there's a growing realisation among individuals, especially the younger generation, regarding their role in fostering a sustainable lifestyle.
