New furniture market trends emerge in a post-pandemic market

As the pandemic crisis gradually recedes, consumers are now embracing a more conscientious approach to furniture acquisition, placing emphasis on personalisation, delivery flexibility, and product sustainability.

Retailers vs marketplaces
In response to the pandemic-driven changes, established players in the sector have had to reassess their strategies to adapt to evolving consumer behaviours. For instance, Maisons du Monde launched its marketplace in 2022.

To counter the ascent of marketplaces, traditional retailers are exploring new concepts in urban areas. Notably, concepts like Ikea City, But Cosy, But City, and Castorama with several Casto stores are emerging.

Despite the enduring popularity of physical stores for furniture purchases, eCommerce is steadily gaining traction year after year.

Direct Sales vs Direct-to-Consumer (DTC)
Following significant growth during the pandemic, pure-play retailers specialising in furniture faced a less favourable environment afterward. This shift is primarily due to the resurgence of traditional physical retail activities, coupled with the adoption of omnichannel strategies by established players during the pandemic.

Second-hand furniture has a limited presence in France, Germany, and Italy. In France, Ikea offers 'Second Life Spaces' where customers can purchase second-hand furniture at discounted prices, along with a product take-back program for store credits.

Personalisation
Customisation of furniture products is a notable trend in the market. Through online configurators, consumers can tailor and visualise furniture pieces in their living spaces before making a purchase. Whether adjusting sofa dimensions or selecting finishes, the array of options allows customers to create bespoke furniture, contributing to product differentiation, heightened satisfaction, and increased sales.

Delivery options
Advancements in logistics have led to innovations in delivery methods. Customers now have the flexibility to choose delivery dates and times, sometimes even modifying their choices until the day before delivery. The aim is to streamline the online shopping experience.
